Monsanto grant helps expand MySci at WUSTL

WUSTL’s Institute for School Partnership has received a $2.2 million grant from the Monsanto Fund to take the MySci program to the next level. MySci’s mission is to cultivate the region’s next generation of scientists by engaging elementary students in science, technology, engineering and math through interactive learning experiences.

Biology chair part of national initiative to change undergraduate education

The Partnership for Undergraduate Life Sciences Education announced that Kathryn Miller, PhD, professor and chair of the Department of Biology in Arts & Sciences, has been selected as one of 40 Vision and Change Leadership Fellows. Over the next year, the fellows will recommend models for improving undergraduate life-sciences education.

Dharnidharka named director of pediatric nephrology

Vikas Dharnidharka, MD, an award-winning specialist in pediatric kidney disease and transplantation, has been named director of the Division of Nephrology in the Department of Pediatrics at the School of Medicine.

VIDEO: Brown School students start off year ‘walking the walk’

Before classes began, social work students, faculty and staff went out into the St. Louis area for the annual Brown School Community Service Day. “It’s nice to start off the year ‘walking the walk,’” says Brown School Professor Melissa Jonson-Reid, PhD. A video captures the action at Gateway Greening, one of 21 agencies that received assistance.

Series explores changing role of contemporary design

Designers increasingly are asked not only to create objects, but also to address large-scale social problems — from poverty to sustainability to eating disorders. In September, the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts will launch its lecture series with two speakers, Jon Kolko and Cynthia E. Smith, who are rethinking the role of contemporary design.
